Taiwan Season: UNDER MASK
Hotly-tipped young choreographer Lai Yun-Chi (formerly a dancer with Shechter II and a member of Humanhood) is keen to uncover what lies beneath our layered personalities – the roles we play, the identities we choose, the faces we wear. Drawing upon ceremonial folk rituals, a battery of cross-cultural movement styles and practices and a family history of leathercraft, she and her company Mailantia present the UK premiere of a bold, intricate and brand-new steampunk-influenced quartet about concealment and transformation. Expect a unique and original mix of East-West sensibilities.

A very powerful performance. I was particularly struck by its dialogue with Chinese opera, evident in the makeup, movement and sound design, and by the way these elements are woven into a contemporary physical language. What impressed me most was the dancers’ range, power and dramatic capability. There is a remarkable control and presence in their movement, but also a real sense of vulnerability. I especially appreciated the candour of the performance. Although the work explores masks, identity and what we choose to conceal, it never feels overly constructed or distant. Instead, there is something very open and human beneath the theatricality.
