Rooted in the ancient Eritrean and Ethiopian ceremony, this intimate, multi-sensory experience unfolds through storytelling with every pour. It’s a window into a Habesha home, where families and friends gather, share, and commune. Guided by artist LULA.XYZ, this ritual is more than a drink—it’s a portal. Full disclosure: I work closely with Lula. However, I went into this show not really knowing much about it. it's very loosely lead that the bleed between the ceremony and a conversation is very close together. Ours focused on our names and our own origins and families. it felt.. very freeing to be so vulnerable and I loved the intricacies of the observations by all participants and Lula. Lula’s show is a wonderful immersive theatre piece that puts you at the heart of an Erithrean household. It didn’t feel like a show and more like a heartwarming coffee and the opinion to connectwith strangers that could become friends. Throughout the play there were many moment of uncertainty as to whether or not this was a conversation or a performance.
